JCE Resources for Student Assessment (QBank)

Several collections are available. ChemEd X provides access to questions with answers to verified teachers of chemistry.

Sample questions from the collection can be found at the ChemEd Courses service of the Chemical Education Digital Library. Browsing some of the various question collections is not currently supported at ChemEd X. ChemEd X will be offering assessment questions and tools.

To request access to download the collection of questions with answers, please use the contact form. A $20 USD fee is charged for this service, which is avialable only to verified chemistry teachers.

General Chemistry

The general chemistry collection of questions covers 19 topics. Each topic contains several sets of questions.

Sample questions from this collection can be found at the ChemEd Courses service of the Chemical Education Digital Library.

Complete sets of questions with the answers are available only to verified chemistry teachers who have paid the verfication fee (to request access and initiate the verification process, use the QBank contact form). The general chemistry questions with answers are available in several formats:

  • text files specifically for importing into the WebCT course management system (but NOT in the WebCT Vista product)
  • text files for importing into the Desire to Learn (D2L) course management system
  • a subset of the questions as HTML that includes all the multiple choice and multiple select questions, but not the matching or short answer questions.

Organic Chemistry

The organic chemistry collection of questions covers over 20 topics generally suitable for sophomore-level organic chemistry courses. Each topic includes several sets of questions.

Sample questions can be found at the ChemEd Courses service of the Chemical Education Digital Library

Complete sets of questions with the answers are available only to verified chemistry teachers who have paid the verfication fee (to request access and initiate the verification process, use the QBank contact form). The oganic chemistry questions with answers are available in the following formats:

  • Microsoft Word documents
  • a subset as files for importing into the WebCT course management system

Physical Chemistry

The physical chemistry collection includes questions generally suitable for upper-level physical chemistry courses. Approximately 900 questions are grouped into 45 topics. Questions in the physical chemistry collection are intended to accompany the chapters and content presented in "Quantum States of Atoms and Molecules", a  JCE Living Textbook. These questions can also be incorporated into the major sections of most physical chemistry texts used in typical undergraduate quantum chemistry courses.

Sample questions can be found at the ChemEd Courses service of the Chemical Education Digital Library.

Complete sets of questions with the answers are available only to verified chemistry teachers who have paid the verfication fee (to request access and initiate the verification process, use the QBank contact form). The physical chemistry questions are available in a format that is intended to be imported into a learning management system such as WebCT or Desire-to-Learn.

ConcepTests for Chemistry

Readers may be familiar with Harvard physicist Eric Mazur's ConcepTests, which have been shown to enhance substantially the comprehension of introductory physics concepts. Conceptual questions are posed to students in the lecture room along with a few possible answers. Students vote on the possible answers, then discuss their answers with their neighbors in the lecture room; a second vote is then taken. This form of peer instruction can not only be an effective pedagogical method, it also provides the instructor with immediate feedback as to how well the class is following the lecture.

Answers to the questions in this collection are included with the collection.
