Dear Readers,

Our June issue of the Xchange highlights just a few of the contributions we have published over the past month. I hope you will take a moment to check in and see what you might have missed.

A Simple Tool to Help Make the Retake Process Less Chaotic

Part of placing value on the process of learning means giving students multiple opportunities to demonstrate understanding. Reassessments are an inevitable part of the process. For many teachers, this presents a logistical problem. The author shares a simple strategy that anyone can replicate to streamline the entire process.

Determination of Vitamin C in a Produce Protector - Iodometric Method

This activity is designed to determine the concentration of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in a produce protector (in this case, Ball® Fruit Fresh) by an iodometric titration method. The same author has written two other recent posts, Introduction to the Concept of Antioxidant - A Demo and Removal of a Dye by Adsorption on a Low-Cost Material - A Quick Test.

Electronic Portfolios and Final Exams

Having used standards based grading for many years, the author has modified what her final exam looks like. She describes how she has incorporated an electronic portfolio in addition to the district mandated final exam.

Collection of and Experiments with Liquid Air

Simple methods to prepare liquid air are described. In addition, ways to test the properties of liquid air and other liquefied gases are explored.

Connecting the Macroscopic to Microscopic: Electrochemistry

This introductory lesson uses a crosscutting concept, structure and function, as a means to model pre-conceptions of a voltaic cell. A phenomena is used to pique curiosity and engage students as they progress through the unit.

An easy copper electroplating demo for your redox unit - Revisited

As the authors' IB seniors were wrapping up their unit on electrochemistry and redox, he used a relatively simple electroplating demonstration to help strengthen the unit.

Especially JCE: June 2018

Erica Jacobsen regularly highlights JCE articles that are of special interest to high school teachers. This month, she focuses on an article, “Developing Awareness of Professional Behaviors and Skills in the First-Year Chemistry Laboratory”. She also gives a shout out to Sibrina Collins, who co-authored a recent letter published in JCE. If you would like to explore the whole issue in more depth, check out Mary Saecker's JCE 95.06 June 2018 Issue Highlights.
