The Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) will be held at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana from July 29 through August 2, 2018. This is an excellent professional development opportunity for high school and college chemistry instructors. This year, there is even a one-day program for K-8 teachers.
Several notable names have been invited to speak at the plenary sessions. Writer Sam Kean has penned many popular books. The Disappearing Spoon, The Violinist’s Thumb and Caesar’s Last Breath are just a few of his chemistry related books. Dr. Jacob Clark Blickenstaff may be most recognized by chemistry teachers as the name behind “Blick on Flicks” a regular column in NSTA Reports. A group of Notre Dame professors (Tank, Lieberman, Roeder, Miller & Bohn) will present a plenary titled “What Would You Fight For?” Leading off the conference is Dr. P. Karen Murphy, Professor of Education, co-author of “Understanding How Students Learn” a book for education leaders.
There are many symposiums to choose from. Topics include social media, particulate level activities, inquiry, AP chemistry, manipulatives, food chemistry, cognitive learning, green chemistry, safety and more. Chemical education researchers present in many of the symposia. Of course, other presenters include high school teachers and professors from two and four year institutions. ChemEd X is hosting a symposium, “Chemical Education Xchange: Engaging with Contributors”. All of the presenters have contributed material to ChemEd X. The schedule of programming will be published as we get closer to the the conference.
