Bob Worley
Bob Worley, FRSC, MSc is the (retired) chemistry advisor for CLEAPSS (www.cleapss.org.uk) in the United Kingdom. After university, he taught students for 20 years, 16 years as Head of Department at Norwich School in the UK. CLEAPSS provides safety and advisory support for teachers and technicians working in schools, colleges of further education, teacher-training establishments and science learning centres, overseas institution that follow UK syllabuses and the International Baccalaureate , field centres, museums, and examination boards and curriculum developers. In addition, CLEAPSS carries out research work for the Department of Education, the Health and Safety Executive of the UK (who have the legal remit to prosecute teachers and employers should unfortunate incidents occur) and the various learned societies, eg the Royal Society of Chemistry. CLEAPSS believes that safety cannot be achieved by paper exercises and form-filling alone but needs to be explained by practical workshops. Bob has delivered hundreds of these courses on safety in chemical procedures and handling chemicals all over the UK and in many parts of world which use UK resources. In carrying out these duties, Bob found that risk from harm was reduced by miniaturising experiments and the work of Professor Bruce Mattson at Creighton University was a source of inspiration to him. Bob has since used contacts from the microscale family all over the world to improve microscale chemistry for use in UK schools. However, to be accepted in UK schools , which are comparatively well-provided for in technician assistance, equipment and laboratories , this style of chemistry has to offer more than the traditional approach. He has written for Royal Chemical Society’ Education in Chemistry and the Association for Science Education on microscale chemistry.
