Chemistry teacher in Michigan who is obsessed with the Modeling Curriculum and really loves the AP chemistry curriculum!  Interested in talking and sharing about those courses.  I also have a love for Organic Chemistry and have introduced that as a full year elective at my high school since 2017.

I am currently at Senior Fellow with Knowles Teacher Initiative - a teaching fellowship for beginning, science and math teachers.  It is a fellowship that has greatly helped influence my career.  If you are a pre-service or first year teacher, I recommend applying!

As a chemistry teacher of ten years there is one unit I used to enjoy but as time has gone on it now feels like a huge task....the unit on the nomenclature of ionic and covalent compounds. Currently, in the state of Michigan, it's not a specific state standard that aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards so it has become “extra” content;
My Modified Grading Strategy preview image

The first time I experienced an unfamiliar grading policy was when I first started teaching high school chemistry in Michigan in 2015. At my school, we are required to offer (or have options) for retakes on summative assessments. There have been mixed feelings at my school about the retake policy because it can be perceived as a way for studen
