Injecting a Sample

Video. Injecting the sample and recording the chromatogram.

To inject the sample, begin by seating the tip of the needle into the injection port. Hold the syringe level and lean forward to insert the needle completely. Use a smooth forward motion of your body, rather than your arms or wrists to perform the injection. This technique makes it much easier to keep the syringe level while injecting, and avoids problems with bending the needle. Depress the piston with a single push and immediately withdraw the syringe from the instrument. Note the injection time by placing a mark on the chromatogram (the mark can be made electronically or manually).

If the peaks of the chromatogram are too large, decrease the quantity of the sample injected into the instrument.
