Writing Conceptual Questions (CQs): Modified Recall with Reason

Modify a recall question or an algorithmic calculation so it requires a student to give a qualitative answer; for example, a list of increasing or decreasing properties or "higher", "lower", or "no change". Then ask for a reason.

Example

Original recall question: Which set of conditions would give a reaction that is spontaneous under all conditions?

H^o < 0, S^o < 0
H^o = 0, S^o = 0
H^o < 0, S^o > 0
H^o > 0, S^o > 0
H^o > 0, S^o < 0

A conceptual question with a reason: Each of the reactions below is spontaneous at 25^oC when P = 1 atm. Which is (are) required to be exothermic?

SO₃(g) + H₂O(l) H₂SO₄(l)
CaO(s) + CO₂(g) CaCO₃(s)
H⁺(aq) + OH^-(aq) H₂O(l)

Explain your reasoning.
