Preparing the Electrodes

Identify the electrodes on your meter. Some meters have a protective cap over the electrodes, so it may be necessary to remove the protective cap to expose the electrodes.

Check to see that the electrodes are clean. Rinse the electrodes with distilled water. The electrodes should not have a white, crusty solid on the outside. Try to gently remove most of the white solid with a paper towel, then rinse the electrodes with 1 M HCl(aq) followed by more water rinses.

The electrodes should be rinsed with distilled water before and after the conductivity of any solution is measured.
