Measuring the Conductivity of a Solution

IMAGE. The two electrodes.

Remember to rinse the electrodes with distilled water before and between each measurement. Dip the meter into the solution, making sure the electrodes are sufficiently covered by the solution. Immerse only the electrodes, do not immerse the entire meter. Look for air bubbles on or around the electrodes. The conductivity of the solution will not be accurate if air bubbles are in contact with the electrodes.

Turn on the device. Record the number shown on the display. For accurate readings, mix the solution while taking the reading. Use a magnetic stir bar or gently swirl the meter in the solution.

When you are finished, rinse the electrodes with distilled water, dry the device, and replace the protective cap (if a cap is required).
