Recording Data

IMAGE. The pen has been adjusted to near one edge of the paper using the zero knob.

Switch the "standby/record" toggle to "record".

Adjust the baseline position with the chart recorder's "zero" knob so that the pen is near one edge of the paper. If the peaks are deflected off the paper, either adjust the pen to the other side of the paper or switch the polarity of the signal from the instrument.

Lower the pen to the paper. The pen should touch the paper. Then, switch the chart speed toggle to either cm/min or cm/hour. The chart speed can be adjusted to optimize the appearance of the chromatogram. Slower settings will cause the peaks to be narrower and the distance between two peaks to be smaller.

Record the baseline for a few seconds before starting an experiment. The beginning of an experiment can be noted on the chart paper by quickly turning the "zero" knob and then returning it to its original baseline position simultaneously with the beginning of the experiment (when the sample is injected during a gas chromatography experiment).
