The Coordination Number

An atom of a CCP structure has a coordination number of 12.

In order to see the 12 nearest neighbors around a metal atom in a FCC unit cell, it is necessary to include atoms in adjacent unit cells.

All atoms in a CCP structure are located on lattice points, thus all have the same coordination number and coordination sphere.

The links on the right demonstrate these concepts further. Clicking on the underlined text above will link to a definition.
