Coordination in a Plane: CN 3

The coordination number of a cation, the number of anions a cation can touch, depends on the relative sizes of the ions as measured by their ionic radii .

Let's see how many anions we can place around the cation shown in a plane. We will try 2, 3, and 4 anions. Remember, each cation touches as many anions as possible to maximize the forces of attraction.
