Mechanical Mixing

IMAGE. A common hot plate/magnetic stirring plate.

Two common mechanical devices are available for mixing: magnetic stirring plates, motor-driven stirring blades.

Magnetic Stirring Plates: A magnetic stirring bar is placed in the solution to be mixed and the magnetic stirring plate is positioned below the container. The stirring plate is turned on and the magnetic stirring bar mixes the solution. Select a magnetic stirring bar that fits within the container, but is also large enough to thoroughly mix the mixture. (See the Hot Plate/Magnetic Stirrer module for more information about using a magnetic stirrer.)

Motor-driven Stirring Blades: When mixing large volumes or when a solid is a major component of the mixture, magnetic stirring will not work. In these cases, a motor-driven stirrer can be used. A motor drives a stirring blade that mixes the solution.
