It is possible to use the tare function to 'automatically' subtract out the mass of the weighing vessel. The tare function will reset the display to zero even though there is an object on the balance. Thus, the display will indicate the mass of any new material placed on the balance after the tare button has been depressed. This added feature can reduce the amount of data you record in your notebook, but this technique is not advised when a balance is shared with other users.
