Single Transverse Pulses: Reflection of a Wave at a Fixed End
The generation of single transverse pulses and reflection from a fixed end are demonstrated. Discussion A quick side-to-side flick of the wrist generates a single pulse that moves along the Slinky™ displacing the coils of the Slinky™ at right angles, or transverse, to the direction of wave movement down the length of the Slinky™. When the pulse reaches the other end of the Slinky™, which was held in a fixed position, it is reflected. Note that the direction of the displacement caused by the pulse reflected from the fixed end is opposite to that of the original pulse, or inverted.
