pH of Aqueous Ammonia, Cyclohexylamine, and Aniline

An electrode measures the pH of 0.1M aqueous solutions of ammonia, cyclohexylamine and aniline.

Three beakers are shown containing 0.1M aqueous solutions of ammonia, cyclohexylamine, and aniline respectively. The pH of each solution is measured.

Ammonia

Cyclohexylamine

Aniline

Aniline is less basic than cyclohexyl amine due to the electron withdrawing effect of the benzene ring that removes electron density from the basic nitrogen. Cyclohexylamine is similar in base strength to ammonia.
