Adding colorless sodium chloride to colorless silver nitrate produces a white precipitate.

Solution A: 0.2 M sodium chloride (colorless)
Solution B: 0.1 M silver nitrate (colorless)
Precipitate: (white)
AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) --> AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq)

The mixing of solutions of silver nitrate and sodium chloride results in the formation of a mixture composed of a solution of sodium nitrate and a silver chloride precipitate.

Slide 1: This represents a silver nitrate solution. The violet balls are silver ions. Nitrate ions are represented by a blue ball (nitrogen) surrounded by three red balls (oxygen).

Slide 2: This represents a sodium chloride solution. The blue-grey balls are sodium ions and the green balls are chloride ions

Slide 3: This represents a mixture of silver ions, chloride ions, sodium ions and nitrate ions as they might appear before reaction.

Slide 4: This is a representation of the mixture present after the reaction is complete. It shows silver chloride solid, sodium ions and nitrate ions.
