mass spectrometry

Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to separate compounds based on differences in their molecular mass, as well as identify unknown compounds, quantify known compounds, and determine the structure and chemical properties of molecules. Common types of mass spectrometry (MS) include FAB (fast atom bombardment), ESI (electrospray ionization), MALDI (matrix assisted laser desorption), TOF (time of flight), FT (Fourier transform), and ICP (inductively coupled plasma). Mass spectrometry is also often combined with other analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC).
