"Heat and Beat" Methods

  • An alloy, NiAl, can be produced by the "Heat and Beat" method.

  • The mixture of Ni and Al is first ground into a fine powder and then pressed into a bar under high pressure.

  • The bar is then ignited with a propane torch.

  • The reaction is highly exothermic once started.

  • The reaction proceeds down the length of the bar.

  • The bar of the resulting compound shows far less attraction to a magnet than the precursor bar.
