An alloy, NiAl, can be produced by the "Heat and Beat" method.The mixture of Ni and Al is first ground into a fine powder and then pressed into a bar under high pressure.The bar is then ignited with a propane torch.The reaction is highly exothermic once started.The reaction proceeds down the length of the bar.The bar of the resulting compound shows far less attraction to a magnet than the precursor bar.
