F-centers, from German word for color (farbe), can result from an electron trapped in halide vacancy in an alkali halide crystal.This imparts a purple color to a KCl crystal.Similar defect imparts color to smoky quartz and amethyst.Can be induced in a KCl crystal by a tesla coil, X-rays, or gamma rays.
