Dislocations

  • One type of defect is a dislocation.

  • The dislocation is recognizable as the "half row" of bubbles or atoms that appears inserted in the array.

  • Look along the rows of atoms indicated by the arrows at an oblique angle to find two "half rows".

  • The ear of corn to the right shows such a "half row" in its arrangement of kernels.

  • A three-dimensional view showing the dislocation core passing through the solid like a string.
