One type of defect is a dislocation.
The dislocation is recognizable as the "half row" of bubbles or atoms that appears inserted in the array.
Look along the rows of atoms indicated by the arrows at an oblique angle to find two "half rows".
The ear of corn to the right shows such a "half row" in its arrangement of kernels.
A three-dimensional view showing the dislocation core passing through the solid like a string.
