As the speaker is moved toward and away from the reflecting surface, it passes through several positions at which standing waves can be established. At these positions, sound levels are greatest.

The principle here is similar to the different musical pitches generated by organ pipes. Pipes of different lengths and different diameters can accommodate standing waves of different frequencies (different pitches or notes).
