Naturally occurring latex is a viscous liquid. It consists of very small globules of hydrocarbon polymer suspended in water. Ammonia in the solution keeps the latex in the liquid state. When a dilute acid is added to the latex, the ammonia is neutralized. The polymer chains join in a random network, forming solid rubber. The bonds in the polymer chains rotate easily, allowing the rubber to be stretched in several directions.
