Two test tubes contain basic, aqueous solutions of salicylaldehyde. Acetone is added to the first tube. After 3 minutes the orange solid aldol product forms.

Discussion
Two test tubes contain basic, aqueous solutions of salicylaldehyde. Acetone is added to the first tube. After 3 minutes the orange solid aldol product forms. There is no change in the control. This reaction is the basis of a clinical test for measuring the acetone levels in the serum of diabetics.
