Narrative
Two solutions of vanadyl tartrate complexes, one with two tartrate ligands in the D configuration and the other with two tartrate ligands in the L configuration, have been prepared. When the solutions are mixed, a complex containing one tartrate ligand in the D configuration and one in the L configuration gradually forms, and the color changes from violet to red. The increase in entropy due to the mixing of the two ligands is one of the driving forces in the reaction.
