Water is added to burning hexane in an attempt to extinguish the flame.

Hexane is poured into a beaker, and ignited. Water is added in an attempt to extinguish the flame. Water and hexane form two layers and the hexane continues to burn. The flame is finally extinguished by covering the hexane beaker with a larger beaker.
