Effect of Temperature
A plunger is removed from its barrel and the barrel is filled with steam from a flask of boiling water. The water vapor in the barrel is at about 95 degrees Celsius, close to the boiling point of water. The plunger is then reinserted into the barrel and the syringe is placed in an ice bath. The water vapor in the barrel condenses, decreasing the internal pressure, and atmospheric pressure pushes the plunger into the barrel.
